To some she was Sue, to Debbie, Denise and Donna, she was Mother, to her 8 grandchildren, their spouses, her 21 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandson, she was Mammaw. The Matriarch, The breath and color of life, The giver of abundant and selfless love, The open heart and home. In 9th grade, she met the love of her life, Bill, where they both attended Harding High School in 1948. Highschool sweethearts, whose marriage in 1949 created a legacy of love that continues to this day. She raised their three daughters, who all proclaim they had the "best childhood ever." She loved others selflessly and chose to be the neighborhood beautician for the elderly ladies at Woodruff Place and pin curls on Saturday nights for her girls. She always put everyone before herself. She taught private kindergarten at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. She served the Charlotte community she loved as a teacher's assistant at Nations Ford, Allenbrook and Paw Creek Elementary, where she retired. She enjoyed educating the next generation in using their voice to make a difference in the world and gave of her time serving in many elections as a registrar at Allenbrook Elementary. She enjoyed socializing and never met a stranger. Her home and heart were always open. She loved to travel and play Bridge with her Bridge Club Ladies. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, William "Bill" Durham and parents Paul and Bertha Yount of Hickory, North Carolina. Sue is survived by her brother Rev. Paul Yount (Jean), adoring daughters, Debbie Woods(Mike), Denise Wofford(Tom) and Donna Durham Rivers. Her grandchildren: Blake Wofford(Missi), April Boryczewski(Lee), Allison Gibson(Trevor), Billy Woods(Brittany), Nicole Steagall(Travis), Anna Reckard(Dan), Seth Wofford(Sydney) and Brian Allen(Mary Lena). Her great-grandchildren: Nickolas, Christian, Peyton, Makenna(Will), Alexys, Elliott, Camden, Noah, Alayna, Emma Rian, Emma Katherine, Kylie, Austin, Duncan, Allie, Kellan, Maylena, Sage, Jacob, Stella, Frederick and her great-great-grandson, River and beloved nieces and nephews and many special family friends. A Celebration of Life will be held in memory of Sue, along with her husband Bill who passed away April 7 2020 on Saturday, July 24th at 3pm at Assurance United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends after the service to share stories and memories of this amazing couple and the lives they touched.
