Stuart J. Thompson, age 73 of Knoxville, passed peacefully with his family by his side at Parkwest Medical Center on November 24, 2024.
He was a member of West Hills Baptist Church.
Stuart had a long career in the automobile service industry. He started at family-owned Thompson's Auto Care Center. He owned Thompson's Speed & Sport and ended his career as an Area Manager with Firestone Complete Auto Care, Nashville Region.
As a lifelong resident of Knoxville, he graduated from Holston High School and The University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. He was a faithful Vol fan and a longtime contributor to The Tennessee Fund and a member of The Shareholders Society.
Stuart was an avid golfer and member of Fox Den Country Club where he made his first hole-in-one.
He led a very active and charitable life as a leader of several organizations. He was past president of Knoxville Jaycees, a US JCI Senator, Tennessee Vol Corp, Tennessee JC Education Foundation, Camp Discovery, a 32nd degree Mason and member of Burlington #763, a Kerbela Shriner, and a member of Elks Lodge #160.
Stuart had a servant's heart and made it a point to give his time and support to make our community better. He was involved with The Boys and Girls Club of East TN, United Way, Boy Scouts of America, and was a Charter Board Director of Volunteer Rescue Mission. He met his wonderful wife, Sandy, while volunteering on the fundraising committee for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Stuart is preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Thompson; mother, Jean Thompson Whittaker (Simmie); and sister, Karen Fairchild.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 30 years, Sandy Thompson; sister, Anne Cox (Larry) of Sherman, TX; brother-in-law, Rick Mullenix (Marty) of Blountville, TN; special nephew, Marcus Mullenix; as well as several nieces and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 29th from 4:00-6:00pm at Rose Funeral & Cremation - Mann 6200 Kingston Pike. Family and friends will gather for a graveside service at Mt. Carmel FWB Church, 3711 Beechcreek Road, Rogersville, TN on Saturday, November 30th at 1:00 pm with Rev. Keith Williams officiating. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his memory to the charity of your choice.
