Steven A. Vohs, age 69, of Indian River, died at home unexpectedly on December 27, 2021. The son of Joseph and Irene Vohs, Steve was born in Detroit, raised in Warren, and graduated from Cusino High School. He went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. Very patriotic, Steve served stateside as a military policeman at Fort Campbell, KY during the Vietnam Era. He married the love of his life, Patricia A. Stanley on December 22, 1972 at St. Sylvester Catholic Church in Warren.
In 1974 Steve and Patricia moved to Indian River where Steve opened Stanley's Variety, which later became Ben Franklin, and eventually The Summer Store. The Summer Store was Steve's passion. As a valued member of the business community, Steve was sought out for professional and honest guidance. Early to rise, Steve was up at 5:00 AM to ensure he made his daily rounds throughout town to maintain those critical business relationships that are often overlooked.
Steve loved to travel with his favorite destinations being Jamaica, Las Vegas, and Orlando. He enjoyed trade shows where he could see new merchandise and collaborate with fellow businesspeople. As an avid music lover, Steve loved Jimmy Buffett and anything classic rock. Though he wasn't one to sit idle, he did enjoy sitting by the Indian River watching the boats go by. Well-known in the community, Steve was a regular at Vivio's where he enjoyed having dinner several times each week. Most of all Steve enjoyed his family. A very cool grandpa, Steve adored his grandchildren and bought them the best gifts, perhaps because he was a kid at heart. Being a kid at heart he was known for buying those wacky, crazy gifts that no parent would ever buy. He loved spending time with his family and was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren.
Steve will be remembered for always taking care of others. He showed selfless concern for his family, friends, and community. He was generous to those who were struggling and frequently donated to worthy causes. He had tremendous work ethic, was an early riser, and could not sit still. He usually had a list of things he wanted to accomplish each day. He had a strong faith in God and was a longtime member of Cross in the Woods.
Loving, kind, and generous, Steve was devoted to his family. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 49 years, Patricia Vohs, of Indian River; daughter, Erin Leigh (Peter) Milosavlevski of Macomb Township; sons, Ryan Paul Vohs of New Haven and Adam Patrick (Courtney) Vohs of Chesterfield; and nine grandchildren who filled his heart with joy, Andrew, Tyler, Nicholas, Victoria, Isabelle, Madeline, Ainsley, Anderson, and Lillian. He also leaves his sisters, Christine (Charlie) McConnell of Chesterfield and Diane O'Donnell of Sterling Heights; brothers, Kenneth (Kathy) Vohs and James (Lori) Vohs, both of Shelby Township; and many nieces and nephews. Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Irene.
A funeral mass was held on December 31, 2021 at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Shelby Township. Those planning an expression of sympathy please consider a donation in memory of Steve to Tunnel to Tower Foundation at www.t2t.org. Cremation arrangements were in care of Chagnon Funeral Home.
