Steven Cruz, 72, Oxnard, California, was called home to the Lord on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. He died peacefully at home following a chronic illness. Steve was born on June 9, 1948, in San Diego, California to David and Mary Cruz. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, and daughter, Stephanie. He is also survived by sisters, Stella Cervantes, Pam Castro (Steve), Dora Garrow, and Pearl Nuno (Richard); and brothers Danny Cruz (Stephanie) and Paul Cruz. He is survived as well by brothers-in-law Mike Gonzalez (Irma), Johnny Gonzalez (Rita), Tommy, and Bobby Gonzalez; sisters-in-law Connie, Hopie, Chayo, and Tina Gonzalez. Steve is also survived by Goddaughters Tina Cruz and Monica Gean and many beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends.
Steve was proud of his service in the Marines in the Vietnam War. Semper Fi was a life motto for him. After being honorably discharged from his military service, he began a life-long career in youth correctional services. He retired from California Youth Authority in 1999. In retirement, Steve was blessed to travel throughout the world on many cruises with his wife and daughter. His favorite vacations included trips to the Holy Land, Vatican, Lourdes, and F?tima.
Steve was loved by so many for his gentle soul. He was a humble man who tried to be an example of Jesus' love for others. He was kind and respectful to all. Steve will be forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is greatly missed.
Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, January 28, 2021, at11:15 a.m. at Santa Clara Catholic Mortuary and Cemetery in Oxnard. Interment will immediately follow. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a time when it is safe. Instead of flowers, please consider honoring Steve's memory with a donation to your favorite charity.
