Steve Poling transitioned to his heavenly home on October 15, 2022.
Loving and serving his family was always a priority for Steve. He grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana with his parents and five siblings, who he continued to cherish through calls and visits even after he moved to Georgia. He married his forever sweetheart Barbara in 1965, and there has never been a man more devoted to and in love with his wife than Steve. Together they raised two daughters, Katie and Carolyn, and the family enjoyed countless of family vacations, holiday celebrations, game nights, and Sunday dinners. "Grandaddy" was likely his favorite title as Steve delighted in entertaining his grandchildren, Kathryn and McCormick, with his corny jokes and silly antics - never too tired for a fun game or amusing story. In his fifty- two years as a parent and grandparent, Steve never missed a dance recital, drama performance, or band/chorus concert.
With a bachelor's degree from VanderCook School of Music and master's and specialist degrees from the University of Georgia, Steve served as band director and teacher of chorus, drama, and general music for thirty-eight years. He genuinely loved working with kids of all ages and delighted in introducing them to the beauty and magic of music.
As a lifelong Methodist, Steve cherished the First United Methodist Church of Madison. He served as choir director for eighteen years, chaired the building committee for the Epworth building, was a founding member of the United Methodist Men, made countless trips in the handicapped van taking people to church and doctor's appointments, drove the preschool bus for field trips, visited the sick and elderly, grilled hamburgers for the youth, served as Sunday School Superintendent, set up a multitude of tables and chairs through the years, and so much more. Through his vast examples of service, Steve showed the world his love for Christ.
Donations may be made in honor of Steve Poling to Madison First United Methodist Church or the Morgan County High School Band earmarked for the Steve Poling scholarship.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 18 from 5-7 PM at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 19 at 2 PM at Madison First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Madison City Cemetery.
