Stephen Creighton Douglas, car enthusiast,
historic restoration specialist, dies at 71
Stephen Creighton Douglas, 71, of Paeonian Springs, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021, at INOVA Loudoun Hospital, surrounded by family.
Born Sept. 29, 1949, Steve was the son of the late Gen. Clarence James Douglas Jr. and Barbara Creighton Douglas. He grew up in an Air Force family, which provided him with many travel opportunities and experiences before his family moved to Virginia. After graduating from W.T. Woodson High School in Fairfax, in 1968, Steve went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business at the University of Maryland before settling in Northern Virginia.
Steve had an early and lifelong love of cars. His love of sports car convertibles, particularly, began when he was a young man, and led to the purchase of many Porsches, which he enjoyed driving, racing and restoring.
This passion for cars also fostered his career in the automobile industry, in varying capacities, over 30 years. The next 20 years he spent restoring old houses, building and contracting. Steve was well-respected in both fields, always a leader in the sales and management positions at car dealerships, and a working mentor on job sites.
Steve and Sue restored their own home, built in 1899, in Paeonian Springs. Along with restoring and antiquing, they enjoyed annual beach vacations, volunteering at church and their daughter's school, and spending time with their families. Steve was a member of Catoctin Presbyterian Church in historic Waterford, where he served as Property Elder for more than 20 years.
Steve was an avid reader and history buff. And, along with automobiles, he loved historic building restoration, sailing, boating, fishing and kayaking.
Steve was admired and respected by all who knew him. He has been described as a caring, kind, giving and genuine soul, who was steadfast, reliable and a great storyteller. Steve's gentle spirit, integrity and generosity were an inspiration to many, and his pure heart and forgiving nature endured throughout his life. He remained a devoted husband, father, brother and friend.
Steve is survived by Susan Douglas, his wife of 31 years, his daughter, Brittany Bondar (Andrey Bondar), a son, Scot McKee (Jonathan Lampe), his mother, Barbara Douglas, and six siblings: Robert Johnson (Gay), James Douglas, Jeffrey Douglas (Linda), Shawn Lamb (Jim), Robert Douglas (Ashli), and Heather Douglas. He also leaves behind nieces, nephews, many other relatives, neighbors, colleagues and friends.
A memorial service will take place at Catoctin Presbyterian Church, 15565 High St., Waterford, Virginia, on Saturday, May 22, at 1 p.m. COVID-19 guidelines will be followed, and the service will be livestreamed. Friends and family may watch the live stream of the service at catoctin.org/watch-live.
Graveside services will be held immediately afterward at historic Hillsboro Cemetery in Loudoun County, with a reception following at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Loudoun Hunger Relief in Leesburg, Virginia (loudounhunger.org), or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org).
