Stephanie Ann Williams Crumpler passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Capital Oaks Retirement Community in Raleigh, North Carolina at the age of 83. She was born in Durham, North Carolina on February 11, 1939 to John Hopkins Williams, Jr. and Virginia Dawson Williams.
Stephanie is survived by three children, Elizabeth Crumpler McCracken (Douglas) of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, James Fulton Crumpler III (Sylvia) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Stephanie Caroline Crumpler of Wilmington, North Carolina, as well as three grandchildren, Caroline E. McCracken, Alexander M. McCracken, and Anderson R. Crumpler. She is also survived by a sister and brother, Elizabeth W. Davis (Bo) and John H. Williams (Linda), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Stephanie grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina where she attended Wiley Middle School and Reynolds High School. She later attended Sullins College in Virginia. In 1960, Stephanie married James Fulton Crumpler Jr., and the two eventually made Rocky Mount, North Carolina their home. While there, Stephanie raised three children, volunteered at Nash General Hospital, was an active member in the Junior League, and later worked at Ruby Braswell Realty. In 1988, she returned to her hometown of Winston-Salem where she started a new career working in the Department of Development and Alumni Affairs at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (referred to by Stephanie as "the clouds"!). She loved her job at the medical center and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know and connecting with the patients at the hospital. After eighteen years working at the medical center, Stephanie retired and began to spend her time going to the symphony, visiting the North Carolina mountains, and being with her grandchildren. In 2016, Stephanie moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to be closer to her son. She resided at Capital Oaks Retirement Community, a place she loved to call home and a place where she had many friends.
Stephanie was one of a kind with a great sense of humor, a real lover of life, and a maker of friends wherever she went. She continuously shared her endless love and her unbreakable spirit with her family, her friends, and just about anyone she met. Stephanie never knew a stranger. She had many lifelong friends, most with whom she kept in touch throughout her life. It did not matter who you were, Stephanie was eager to greet anyone she encountered with her enthusiastic energy, kindness, and warm smile. She was also a living example of how facing challenges and hardships with a positive outlook makes all the difference. Stephanie's life was nothing short of well-lived, and her family and friends will be forever grateful for the time they had with her.
