Stanley G. Matthews, 80, of Worcester, died Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at the UMass-Memorial Medical Center Memorial Campus after an illness.
Stan leaves his wife of 52 years, Patricia A. (Bergin) Matthews; two sons, Paul F. Matthews of Worcester, and Brian J. Matthews and his wife Wendy Cannella of York, Maine; four grandchildren, Quinn D. and Catrina G. Matthews, and Dewey Cora and Hollis Ruby Cannella Matthews; a sister Elaine Wolf and her husband Douglas of Syracuse, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
Stan was born in Hampden, Maine, son of the late Cecil and Grace (Crockett) Matthews. He was a graduate of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and Nichols College in Dudley. After college he moved to Worcester.
Early in his career, Stan worked many years for the Worcester Redevelopment Authority. He followed with a management position with the Worcester Housing Authority, including programs to help rehabilitate the three-decker housing stock in Worcester. He went on to administer community block grant funds for the Boston regional office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for 13 years, retiring in 2004.
Stan enjoyed many summers in York, Maine, with family and friends. Through his life he enjoyed exploring the southern coast of Maine by boat. He also constructed several model wooden boats over the years. He also played golf and grew vegetables in his garden. He was a serious fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.
Most importantly, Stan was a loving husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
The Matthews family wishes to thank the health care providers that gave Stan such skilled and compassionate support in recent years including Drs. Daniel Massarelli and Emil Tigas, Jodi Wilson N.P., and the UMass-Memorial ICCU staff on the Memorial Campus.
There will be calling hours on Monday, June 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester. COVID 19 precautions will be followed with masks and distancing. Other funeral arrangements are private.
