Stanley Wright Brown, 76, a long-time resident of Lebanon (NH), died on January 19 at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Molly) Allen of West Lebanon; daughter Jennifer (Dave) Parsons and grandchildren Daniel, Becca, and Matthew, of Lexington, MA; daughter Alison (Bob) Mungenast and grandson Jack, of Arlington, MA; his 103-year-old mother Lois Wright Brown; brother Peter (Nancy) Brown and sister Prudence (Robert) Nagel; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Sanborn Conner Brown in 1981.
Stan graduated from Lexington (MA) High School, and as five generations of his family had done before him, attended Dartmouth College graduating with the Class of 1967. After post-graduate studies at Queens College, Oxford, and Simmons College, he returned to Hanover to work as a librarian at Baker Library, where he remained for 32 years. During that time he was active in the New Hampshire and New England library associations and retired as Curator of Rare Books, Emeritus.
He served on Lebanon's Library Board, the City Council (his last year as mayor), and the Planning Board. An early supporter of Advance Transit, he was on the board for many years. "There goes one of my buses," he would frequently say with pride.
In retirement he pursued his love of reading both fiction and history, and maintained his interest in antiquarian and fine press books. A life-long Red Sox fan, he was delighted to have his loyalty rewarded in recent years. Most of all he loved the English language, unusual and often obsolete words, and use of the Oxford comma. He was not shy about illuminating points of grammar and punctuation for friends and family. Watching his grandchildren grow and emerge as distinct individuals fascinated him. He will be missed by many. There will be a memorial gathering in the spring, when we can be together more safely. Donations in Stan's memory should be made to Advance Transit, PO Box 1027, Wilder, VT 05088 or online at www advancetransit.com.
