Sr. Janice Turner, a Sister of Mercy for 66 years, died peacefully at the Warde Senior Living on May 10, 2024. A native of Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts, Sr. Was the daughter of Roy and Delia (Lattof) Turner, and sister to Roy Turner, Rita Mason, Delaine Fitzgerald, and Mary E. Turner, all deceased.
Sr. Janice was a grammar school teacher for several years, yet spent many more years teaching high school math at Trinity High in Manchester and Bishop Brady in Concord. Sr. Janice changed ministries to care for the aged, both the Sisters of Mercy, and others throughout the United States. She graduated from Mount Saint Mary College, then in Hooksett, NH, and went on to graduate from Boston University's School of Social Work with a LICSW. She then attended The University of Southern California, earning a certificate in Gerontology.
She was a discharge planner at Emerson Hospital in Concord, MA, a Director of Social Work at Suburban Manor in Acton, MA, spending the rest of her ministry years as Administrator at the Warde Senior Living in Windham, NH. Sr. Janice also was an Ombudsman out of Concord, NH, developed a pre-retirement program for the aged, which she gave many times both locally, and in various parts of the country.
She wrote articles on the Gift of Aging, worked with women inmates in the NH State prison, and taught English in the Mercy Immigration Project in Manchester, NH before retiring to the Assisted Living at Warde Senior Living. Sr. Janice enjoyed cooking and baking, especially Lebanese food, reading, sports, cards, being a welcoming presence to all who stayed at her home, organizing gatherings, and volunteering as a bus monitor at many Boston Marathons. She loved being a Sister of Mercy and will be missed by the Sisters, her family and friends.
Sr. Janice leaves many nieces and nephews, friends, including her faithful friend, Sr. Janice Loiselle, and her longtime friends, Edwina Cronin, Claire Hickey, and the Sisters of Mercy, Associates, and Companion.
Family and friends may call at the Warde Senior Living Center, 21 Searles Road, Windham, New Hampshire on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 10:00-11:00 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on May 17, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, New Hampshire.
