"Retired Appellate Court Judge"
Honorable Socrates H. Mihalakos, 88, of Vero Beach, FL, formerly of Cheshire and Waterbury, CT, entered into the gates of heaven on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, in the comfort of his Florida home. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Montgomery) Mihalakos.
Socrates was born in Waterbury, CT, on June 9, 1933, son of the late Harry and Kalliope (Kachulis) Mihalakos. Growing up in Waterbury, Socrates attended Waterbury Public Schools and was a graduate of Crosby High School class of 1951. Afterwards, Socrates received his bachelor's degree from Brown University and went on to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. During his military career, Socrates received the title of 1st Lieutenant (T) and after honorable discharge, served in the reserves.
Socrates then received his Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut. After practicing as a lawyer in Cheshire, Socrates was appointed a Connecticut Superior Court Judge in 1985, and in 2000, while serving as Chief Administrative Judge in Danbury, Socrates was honored to be elevated to Judge of the Appellate Court where he served in Hartford until his full retirement in 2019.
A man of exceptionally strong faith, Socrates loved and served both his church in Connecticut - Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Waterbury, and St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Pierce, FL.
Besides his adoring wife, Joani, Socrates leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Cassandra Rinaldi and her husband Anthony of Southbury, Connecticut, Kristin Tomczak and her husband Michael from Dexter, Michigan, Charisse Mihalakos of Meriden, Connecticut and Anastasia Becvar and her husband William of Oakland, Florida. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Adrianna Mihalek, Brianna Tomczak, Gabriel and Grace Becvar will always remember their dear "Papou". He is also held close by nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his cherished siblings, Stella Condaris, Mary Bergeris, James and Steve Mihalakos and Frieda Mattison.
Arrangements: A traditional Greek funeral service was held on Monday, July 12, 2021, 10:00 a.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 937 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, CT. Everyone met directly at the church on Monday. Burial with full military honors followed at Hillside Cemetery in Cheshire. Calling hours were held Sunday afternoon from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. A Trisagion service was held on Sunday, at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
