Sister Elaine Mackey (formerly Sister M. Carmeline), 88, a Sister of Mercy for 70 years, died May 16, 2021, after a period of declining health. A native of Gloucester, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Emil and Lena (Enos) Mackey.
Sister Elaine held a B.A. degree in education from Mount St. Mary College, Hooksett, New Hampshire, and an M.A. degree in education from Keene State College, Keene, New Hampshire. For more than 50 years, she was a dedicated educator of young children. In New Hampshire, she taught at St. Patrick in Manchester, St. John in Laconia, St. Joseph in Keene, St. Christopher in Nashua, St. Thomas Aquinas in Derry, Sacred Heart in Hampton, and St. Patrick in Pelham, where she also served as principal. In Michigan, she taught at Immaculate Conception in Anchorville. Sister Elaine was also a certified reading specialist who tutored, worked with autistic students, and mentored new teachers at Holy Cross in Marine City, and St. Mary in St. Clair, Michigan. After retiring from teaching, she volunteered at Mercy Hospital in Michigan.
Before leaving Michigan to return to New Hampshire in 2012, Sister Elaine was awarded a key to the city of Port Huron by the mayor for her service to the elderly. March 8, 2012 was proclaimed "Sister Elaine Day." She continued her volunteer and community outreach ministry in New Hampshire until recently. She is best remembered for her years of commitment to education, her steadfast devotion to God, her family and friends, and her love for the Sisters of Mercy.
Sister Elaine is survived by members of her Mercy Community. In addition, she is survived by her three nieces and two nephews, Emil "Nick" Mackey III and his wife Carolyn of Rockport, Jeanne Lyons of Gloucester, Jeff Mackey and husband Paul Morin of Boston, Lynne Young, of Rockport and Nichole Evans, wife of Edwin Evans Jr. of Beverly. She is also survived by 1 great-niece and 4 great-nephews, Emil N. Mackey IV of Rockport, Rachel and Brian Young of Rockport, Edwin III of Stratford, NH and Nicholas Evans of Newmarket, NH. Sister Elaine is also survived by the mother of her nieces and nephews Geraldine F. and her husband Lionel Nichols. She was predeceased by her brother Emil Mackey, Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 21, 2021, at 10 a.m., at St. Matthew Church, 2 Searles Road, Windham, NH. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford.
