Simone Johnson, age 103, of Albany, GA, died April 15, 2022.
Her Funeral Mass will be at 11 AM on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 at St. Teresa's Catholic Church with interment to follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. The Rev. Ray Levreault will officiate. The family will have a visitation prior to the service at St. Teresa's beginning at 10 AM.
Born in Canada, Mrs. Johnson became a U.S. citizen at an early age. She taught school in Champlain, NY for fourteen years. In 1959, she started to work for Dougherty County Family and Children Services. Mrs. Johnson served on several boards such as Girls Club, Mental Health, and was one of the original members to start a rape crisis center in Albany. She was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church.
In 1973, Mrs. Johnson married Cecil D. Johnson, a retired Air Force Sergeant. He entered service in 1944 and traveled throughout the world on missions. Cecil died in 1999. Mrs. Johnson then became an associate member of the USAF Photo Mapping and Charting Group where her husband served until retirement. She also was honored as an honorary member of the Second Air Division, the Eighth Air Force, the Fifty-Fifth Air Rescue and other organizations where Mr. Johnson served during and after World War II.
After retiring as Deputy Director of DFACS, Mrs. Johnson helped to organize a group called "survivors" for retirees of DFACS. She was also a member of a Craft Group at St. Teresa's Catholic Church.
Survivors include her daughters: Shirley Pomeroy (Hans), Albany and Diane Meyer (Jay), granddaughter: Peggy Sue Graf (Thomas), Florida; grandsons: John Meyer, Timothy Meyer, Jason Meyer, Jeremy Meyer; deceased sister's sons: Ricky Gosselin (Cheryl), Massachusetts, George Gosselin (Glenna); deceased brother's daughters: Debbie and Melissa; niece: Lynne Miller (Richard), Allegany, NY; great nieces: Jamie and Jodie; dear friend: Linda Mathis, Albany; special care giver: Gloria Soloman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Teresa's Catholic Church, 421 Edgewood Ln., Albany, GA 31707.
