Sidney G. Main, Jr. passed away on December 16th, 2021 at the age of 92 at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Sidney was born on March 2, 1929 in Daytona Beach, Florida, the son of the late Sidney G. Main, Sr. and Lucy Marjorie Bump Main. Sidney attended Christ School in Asheville, North Carolina and graduated from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Florida. Sidney served as a sergeant in the United States Army Air Force from 4/11/47 to 2/14/50 at Great Falls Air Force Base in Montana. Sidney married Jo Anthony on July 29, 1950, during a small ceremony in Daytona Beach, Florida. In the fall of 1950 Sidney attended The University of Florida and graduated in 1954 with a degree in chemical engineering. He worked for Goodyear and Cabot Corporation in Akron, Ohio where he was a regional manager and traveled all over the world. In 1969 Sidney accepted Jesus Christ to be his personal Lord and Savior after reading Psalm 51 from a Gideon International Bible. Sidney became a member of the Gideons in 1969 and helped organize Bible distributions to schools, universities and hotels for decades. He was a member of "The Chapel" in Akron, Ohio and participated in hospital visitation. He had a burden to share Christ with others and also ministered to troubled teenage girls at Safe Landing and men in prison in Akron, Ohio for several years.
Sidney is survived by his two children, Sidney G. Main III and wife Christine of King, N.C. and Lucinda Hill and husband John of Rock Hill, S.C. Sidney is survived by his five grandchildren, Andrew Main and wife Kallie, Christi Wells and husband Kyle, Laura Reynolds and husband Luke, Carrie Black and husband Chad, and Kara Hill, plus sixteen beloved great grandchildren. Sidney was preceded in death by his wife Jo, and sisters Barbara Scott and Georgianna Dickinson.
The family wishes to thank all of the dedicated staff at White Oak Manor Rock Hill and Hospice and Community Care of Rock Hill who took excellent care of Sidney in his final stages of life. Many thanks to Pastor Fant and the Harvest Baptist Church family for all of their support. We also want to extend special thanks to his grandson, Andrew Main, for the beautiful slide presentation he created, and to one of his great granddaughters, Hailey Reynolds, for a beautiful portrait of Sidney she painted that will be on display at the funeral.
