On Monday August 31, 2021 Mr. Sidney J. Johnson slipped away peacefully at Memorial Medical Health University Hospital.
Mr. Sidney J. Johnson 96, was born to the parents of Joseph S. and Elizabeth Johnson in Savannah, Georgia. The Savannah native moved to New York at an early age where he was educated in the public schools of New York.
Sidney J. Johnson was a World War II Navy Veteran. After his service was over, he spent many years in New York before returning to Savannah.
Mr. Johnson joined St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Matthew Southall Brown, Sr..
"Sidney J. Johnson" as he fondly called was an avid reader and a history buff. He was dedicated to his Eastside community and Savannah as a whole which gave him the title of "Mayor of Waters Avenue." He was very involved in the revitalization of the Eastside of Savannah and spent many years and endless hours advocating for growth and development. As a business owner, he sought to use his influence to encourage entrepreneurship throughout the Eastside especially Waters Avenue. He was always willing to help anyone who needed his assistance. He was always seeking to elevate the quality of life for residents of Chatham county especially the Eastside.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mrs. Marion H. Johnson and a host of relatives and friends.
