Sidney Layne Jensen, known fondly as Sid, was born in Richmond, Utah on August 22, 1946. He returned to heaven on June 3, 2024, having spent a remarkable 77 years shaping and touching the lives of those around him.
Sid was raised as a hard-working farm boy, working the family's "Flyin' O" dairy farm in Cove, UT. So much of who he was came from the values and grit he developed working the land as a boy and young man. He loved the land and ran the farm to the end, just like his parents before him. He affectionately called his children and grandchildren, "Flyin' O stock" with great pride and an endearing grin and laugh.
As a young man, Sid served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Gulf States Mission. He demonstrated his hard-working values there and deepened his love for the Lord. Afterwards, he received an education at Brigham Young University. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Cynthia "Cindy" Giles. He learned to value education from his parents and passed it onto his six daughters, each of whom graduated with college degrees. Sid also received a Master's degree in Education. As a dedicated educator, he taught a total of 39 years, and retired from Wasatch School District in 2010. His students, many of whom remember him as their favorite teacher, were the lucky recipients of his humor, wisdom, and the funny nicknames he had a knack for creating.
Sid was a man who couldn't sit still. The need to work was deep in his bones, and every summer he set aside the opportunity to relax and doubled down, working hard for his family. He worked in construction, for the Forest Service, and was the first to respond to fight a forest fire. He and Cindy built their home from the ground up and taught their daughters this value along the way.
Many residents of Midway and Heber knew Sid as the friendly man who took a walk every day, waving to everyone he passed. He was known for his playful spirit, having a nickname for everyone he knew well. Sid was also a train enthusiast. He loved setting up his cherished Christmas train each year and entertaining his grandkids with the smoking engine. His love for trains extended beyond the holiday season, as he also took delight in his role as a conductor on the Heber Valley Railroad and frequenting train shows. He also found time to indulge in his other hobbies of fishing and coin collecting. He had a saying for every situation, many of which his daughters could easily predict.
As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sid served diligently in numerous callings, including Stake Clerk, Ward Mission Leader, Ward Librarian, and temple worker. His dedication to his faith was reflected in his service to others.
Above all, Sidney was a family man. He was married to his loving wife, Cindy, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. He is survived by Cynthia and their daughters, Jessica Warner (Jeromy), Raegan Bown (Ken), Natalie Jensen, Susan Sellers (Nathan), Mimi McDonald (John), Danielle Patrick (Carl), and 21 grandchildren, as well as his sisters Kathy Anderson and Diane Burningham. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Aliene Jensen, his two brothers, Tracy and Craig, and his granddaughter, Mia McDonald.
