Shirley Patricia (McCalla) Stewart, age 84, of Crothersville, IN, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family and caretaker on January 4, 2024, at 7:15 AM. Born on August 8, 1939, in Madison, IN, Shirley was the daughter of Gerald E. Whitsitt and Dorothy P. (Robinson) McCalla. Her mother was remarried in 1946 to Harry McCalla, who adopted and raised Shirley with love and pride in Scottsburg, IN. Shirley dedicated her life to education, she was a Scottsburg High School Class 1957 graduate, and attended Hanover College where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She then transferred to Franklin College where she graduated in 1963. Shirley earned her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University. She was a beloved school teacher who taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade, retiring in 1990. On June 17, 1962, Shirley married the love of her life, James R. "Jim" Stewart, at Scottsburg Presbyterian Church. They shared a beautiful life together until James' passing on February 27, 2013. Shirley was an active member of Crothersville First Baptist Church and the General Charles Scott Chapter of the DAR, she was also a member of Pi Beta Phi. Her hobbies included bowling, playing cards, solving puzzles and crosswords, reading, boating, and water skiing. Above all, she cherished spending time with her grandchildren. Shirley and her husband Jim would spend many vacations throughout their many years of marriage going to Edgewater Condominiums in Panama City Beach Florida. Surviving Shirley is her only child, Jeffery M. (Theresa) Stewart of Cicero, IN, and her three granddaughters: Shelby (Clayton) Sailors of Carmel, IN; McKenzie Stewart of Cicero, IN; Sydney Stewart of Bloomington, IN; and 1 great-granddaughter, Maren Sailors, her furry companion Cooper, and a special cousin Joyce Oyler of New Albany, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry E. & Dorothy P. McCalla, her biological father, Gerald E. Whitsitt, and her husband, James R. Stewart. Funeral services, officiated by Pastor Jon Pearce, will be held on Monday, January 8, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Adams Family Funeral Homes & Crematory in Crothersville, IN, with burial to follow at Crothersville Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects on Sunday, January 7, 2024, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Adams Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Crothersville and after 10:00 AM on January 8, 2024.
