Shirley Lee Anderson McCabe went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 1, 2021. Shirley was born August 18, 1927, in Fruita, Colorado to Carl Brooks and Lela Wilcox Anderson. Shirley grew up in Green River, Utah and lived in Spring Glen, and Sunnyside, Utah before moving to Grand Junction. Shirley graduated from Grand Junction High School in 1945 and shortly afterward moved to San Francisco, California, where she worked for Southern Pacific Freight. Shirley married the love of her life, Joseph A. McCabe, Jr., on March 10, 1952, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and they returned to San Francisco following the wedding and Joe's discharge from the U.S. Marine Corps. They moved to Grand Junction in 1955 and raised their three children here. Shirley worked for many years at the Mesa County Valley School District No. 51, first as the school secretary at Clifton Elementary School, and later in the district's music department. Shirley also became as accomplished artist in oil painting following her retirement from the School District. Shirley was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Grand Junction, where she served as a past Eucharistic Minister.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Phyllis Miller, of Grand Junction, and sister-in-law, Marsha Anderson, of Georgetown, Texas; by her children: Laurie (Tony) McCabe Borski, of New Harmony, Utah; Mike McCabe, of Loma, and Karen Mc Cabe, of Littleton; by her three grandchildren: Melissa Ann "Missy" (Dan) McCabe Bailey, Matt McCabe, and Lauren McCabe Ottman , all of Fruita; by her five great-grandchildren: Hannah McCabe, Izzabella and Mason McCabe, and Madison and McKayla Ottman; and by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Shirley was predeceased by her loving husband, Joe, Brother Tom Anderson, sister-in-law, Gladys Anderson, Brother Verne Anderson, grandson-in-law Tyler Ottman.
The Mass of Resurrection will be offered at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. The family wishes to acknowledge the loving care provided to Shirley at St. Mary's Hospital, La Villa Grande, and Hope West Hospice.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to Hope West Hospice.
