Marvin and Shirley Carlson wholeheartedly served Jesus by serving others together in ministry since nearly the start of their marriage June 11, 1954. They began and built a church in North Dakota early on in marriage. They pastored more than 30 years in Rockford, IL, mostly at the church they founded, Glad Tidings Church. They later started a church in Knoxville, TN, in the mid-1990s with their daughters and their families called Southern Fellowship Church known today as The Church at Bennington Place. They were known for their wise counsel and often spoke on consistency in serving Jesus, attending church and staying committed in marriage. "The Rev" was known, particularly in later years, to preach on having a personal, transformative relationship with Jesus and living an effortless life.
When not serving in the church, Marvin would spend time with his children, grandchildren and later, their spouses, teaching them about the character of Jesus and reminding them to love others and each other well. He'd discuss the goodness of God and the joy of having a relationship with Jesus. He would ask every person he saw every day from waiters to grocers - do you know the Lord? Shirley gave tangible life advice based on scripture. Her witty humor was full of wisdom and helped others dream big in their journey with Jesus.
At the date of their death, they were survived by their daughter Linda (James) Krugjohann and their children Abigail (Stephen) Richardson; Joel (Shawna) Krugjohann; daughter Kathy (Steve) Peterson and their children Ryan (Rebecca) Peterson, Brooke (Damien) Strimple, Ashley (Tom) Skeen, Chad (Sylvia) Peterson, Cody Catherine (Jordan) Thomas and 15 grandchildren; son Phillip (Kim) Carlson and children Katie, Justin, Kristina Carlson; Marvin's brothers Rodney (Eleanor) Carlson and Wayne (Helen) Carlson.
