Shirley Ann Kelley Platt Witter, 89, died Thursday, October 21, 2021, at Concord Place Assisted Living Community surrounded by her family.
She was born December 15, 1931, in Charlotte, NC, a daughter of the late Clarence Pinkney and Sallie Irene (Funderburk) Kelley.
Shirley grew up in Charlotte, NC and graduated from Harding High School in 1950. She enjoyed playing basketball, dancing and singing. After graduating she worked at Union Bank until 1954.
On November 7, 1954, she married A.C. Platt and moved to Myrtle Beach, SC. Shirley and A.C. had three children, Sallie, Charles and Carrie Ann. Shirley and A.C. owned and operated Ocean Side Apartments in Myrtle Beach. A.C. died on February 22, 1967.
In 1970, Shirley met Bill Witter, and they were married on March 12, 1971. They continued to operate Ocean Side Apartments. After a few years they tore down the motel and replaced it with a large convenience store, The Grocerette, and two gift shops. Later they converted one of the gift shops into Witt's Ice Cream.
Shirley served multiple terms as the President of the Chicora Book Club. She was a long-term volunteer at Associated Charities. She expressed her creativity in painting, ceramics, cake decorating, and flower arranging. Her passion was cooking and baking for family visits.
Bill and Shirley volunteered as election poll workers. They enjoyed bowling and golfing together. They loved traveling cross country in their RV, including a trip to Alaska. They also enjoyed an extensive trip throughout Europe. They loved their Golden Retrievers, Zip, Zack and McKinley, and participated in rescue activities.
Bill and Shirley were active members of First Baptist Church of Myrtle Beach.
Survivors include two daughters Sallie (Dale) Lawrence and Carrie Ann (Danny) Robinson; two sons Charles (Cheryl) Platt and Bill (Alana) Witter; grandchildren, Mark Platt, Brian (Rachel) Witter, Frances Lawrence, and Ashley Witter; a great- granddaughter Alice Witter; a sister Jane Kelley. She was preceded in death by both husbands, A.C. Platt and Bill Witter; a son, David Witter.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 30 at McMillan-Small Funeral Home, 910 67th Avenue North, Myrtle Beach, SC 29572. Entombment will be private. The family will receive friends following the service until 5:00 PM.
