Son of Joseph and Catherine Murphy, he was born on July 9, 1939 and raised in South Boston. After the passing of his mother, he was later raised by his step-mother, the late Hope Murphy. He began his career at Capital Supermarket and was fondly known as "20 Below Joe" for his time spent working in the freezers. He served in the National Guard and then joined the Braintree Police Department as a patrolman where he served for 37 years, retiring in 2004. She went on to start the successful Ford Model Shoppe with her daughter Candy which remained a staple in the Boston fashion scene for almost 30 years. They were married in 1952 and shared 66 years together before his passing. Peg was known for her love of hockey and was a lifelong Bruins fan.
