He was born October 11, 1943 in Donaldsonville, Louisiana and got the nickname "Johnnie" from his older sister, who always wanted a little brother named Johnnie. He was also given the name "Rumble" by close friends in high school and college. He attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana, was a founding member of the university's Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity chapter, and earned a degree in Architecture.
