Allen was born in LaGrange on October 20, 1945, to the late Bela and Virginia Emory Lancaster. He graduated from LaGrange High School before attending Mercer University, in Macon, GA, where he earned a degree in History. Allen was an accomplished student athlete, and as an adult, he enjoyed playing golf. He led a nursing home ministry, bringing church services to many who would have otherwise been unable to attend.
