A native of Glasgow, Kentucky, Robert was born on May 31, 1941, to the late Wallace Lee Gilland and Nola (Wheeler) Gilland. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rachel Ann Ives Gilland; his daughter, Julie Gilland; his brother, William Gilland; and his grandson, Bart Dedman. He was the son of the late Herman Lee Freeman and the late Lucy Lee Tays Freeman of Cookeville, Tennessee. Charles was born May 28, 1937, on his family's farm. He attended primary school at the Bangham School and graduated from Cookeville Central High School.
