He grew up in Berwyn, IL, attended Duke University on a Navy ROTC scholarship and was stationed in Washington, D.C. , where he met his wife, Joyce, and raised a family. As a physicist, he collaborated on biomedical research, instrumentation and computation at the Naval Medical Hospital and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD.
