Evelyn was born at home in Arcadia, Indiana on October 26, 1930. She grew up in the Arcadia, Atlanta, Noblesville Indiana area and moved to Edinburgh where she graduated from Edinburgh High School in 1948. She married Vernon Johnson on August 29, 1948 in Salem, IN with their best friends, Harold and Juanita Dougherty who went along on motorcycles and witnessed their nuptials.
