Charles grew up in Houston, TX., graduated from Reagan High School, and went on to attend the University of Houston where he played baseball as a pitcher. Charles was a very active member of his community, no matter where he was. He worked for the Houston Police Department for some time and would coach at the Oaks Dad's Club when he could, he also found time to become a part of the HPD pistol team.
