Helen was born in Washington, Iowa, the second of four sisters, and moved to Milwaukee to become a physical education teacher at Whitefish Bay High School. She met husband Donald on a blind date, and they spent the next 65 years together, sharing a love of skiing, sailing, and their daughters Joan, Janet, and Laura. She asked that there be no funeral service but enjoying a hot fudge sundae in her memory would have made her smile.
