She was born in Detroit and raised in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, the middle child of Robert James Brownell, an educator, and Dorothy Isabel (Ault) Brownell, an artist. Her parents gifted her a lifelong love of learning, appreciation for the arts, and athletic ability. She grew up near her grandparents and with her two sisters, Betty and Nancy, swimming, playing tennis, water and snow skiing, and spending most summers at her beloved family cottage in Bellaire, Michigan where she continued to gather with family and friends all through her life.
