Mary Lue Johnson, 94 of Spearfish, went to Heaven on Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021. Mary Lue Turbak Johnson was born on August 16, 1926 in Kranzburg, SD to Albert and Anna Turbak. She grew up in Kranzburg and went to high school in Goodwin, SD. After high school she went to Sioux Falls College to learn to be a country schoolteacher. She taught country school near Strandburg, SD until she married Robert W Johnson. They lived in many communities and acquired many lifelong friends. Mary Lue had 13 children, including three sets of twins. She stayed at home to care for her family. Ruth Cooper was born September 22, 1926, on a farm between Goodwin and Strandburg, South Dakota to Wayne and Nettie (Bjerke) Smothers. She passed away peacefully on November 16, 2020, at Spearfish Canyon Healthcare in Spearfish. She was 94 years old. Ruth attended grade school in Strandburg and continued her education in Watertown. She married Ronald Cooper on April 21, 1946. While living in Watertown, they became parents to three children, Cheryl, Conrad and Craig. Eventually a move was made to Casper, Wyoming and then to Spearfish in 1966 where she has since resided. Ruth enjoyed sewing, quilting, taking care of flowers and reading. Robert (Bob) Vane Burns Junior, 66 of Spearfish, SD died October 5th, 2020 at the Monument Health Spearfish Hospital from heart disease. Bob was born in Newcastle, Wyoming on October 6th, 1953 to Robert V. and Beverly Burns. After graduating from Newcastle High School, he attended the University of Wyoming. Bob was employed by the Wyoming Department of Transportation for over 30 years enjoying his work from start to finish. He retired from WYDOT in 2011. While at WYDOT he continued his education, earning his Associates of Science degree in Engineering Technology, but when he became a certified bridge inspector; he found that inspecting bridges was his passion. Paul A. Vilhauer, 69, of Spearfish, SD passed away July 8, 2020, at Monument Health in Rapid City, SD. After an accidental fall, health issues arose leading to heart complications. Paul was born November 29, 1950, at Ipswich, SD to Elyard and Leona (Brandner) Vilhauer. He grew up on a farm six miles south of Long Lake, SD. He attended farm school until he went to Leola Public School graduating high school in 1970. Paul was united in marriage to Jeannette Vetch on November 26, 1971, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hosmer, SD. He farmed from 1971-1978. Richard "Dick" Furnish, 94, of Spearfish, South Dakota passed away on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Sandstone Assisted Living in Spearfish. Dick was born January 28, 1927, in Riverside, California to Robert and Essie Furnish. The family moved several times over the next several years as Robert, a pharmacist, found jobs during the depression, finally settling in Orchard Valley, near Cheyenne, Wyoming, when Dick was a teen. He graduated from Central High School in Cheyenne, where he lettered in football and worked at the Historic Plains Hotel.
