Born and raised in Woodhull, IL, Shirley was the daughter of the late Edwin Walter Johnson and Selma Wilhelmina Rosene Johnson. She graduated from Alwood High School in 1949 and was employed at John Deere in Moline, IL, for five years. On September 18, 1951, Shirley married Jack Miller, a love that has lasted over 74 years.
