He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Geology. He moved to San Antonio and worked as a well logger for an oilfield service company. Born on April 14, 1936, in Boyalik, Turkiye near Ankara, Necip was the youngest son of Ali and Emine Guven. He joined the faculty at Texas Tech University in 1972 and served as a full professor in the Department of Geosciences for 35 years until his retirement in 2008. Post retirement, he continued as a research professor at the University of Texas in San Antonio until 2015.
