Al was the 4th of nine children, born to Manuel and Carmen Escoto in Santa Paula on December 28, 1939. She was born on November 23, 1935 in San Pedro Apulco, Zacatecas, Mexico to Adrian and Apolinaria Valdivia. She was the youngest of thirteen children. She came to the United States from Mexico at the age of 15. Once in the United States, Catalina was promoted from the sixth grade to the twelfth grade very quickly.
