She loved growing up in the small town of Brownsville, Minnesota, along the Mississippi River, with her five siblings. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing in La Crosse, WI, and enjoyed telling stories of her nursing career, including working with the iron lung and on an early heart transplant team. She married her husband, Don Lowrey, in 1960, and they enjoyed 55 years of marriage before his passing.
