Julian was born in Nash County to the late Clemon and Ella Ruth Nelms on October 15, 1953. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Clemon Nelms. The owner of the Heekin Law Firm died as she lived: surrounded by friends who loved her dearly. Sarah was born on October 19, 1971 to Linda and Micheal Heekin.
