Lt. Col. Henry Stankus

Lt. Col. Henry W. Stankus, USMC Retired, passed away on October 9, 2018, in Chesapeake, Virginia. Born March 10, 1921, in Wallingford, Connecticut, he enlisted in the Marines in March 1939 and served until June 1964. The Marines recognized his leadership ultimately promoting him to Captain during WWII and acknowledged his bravery by awarding him the Bronze Star for his actions on Guadalcanal in October 1942 and the Navy Cross for his actions on New Britain in December 1943. When the wounds he received on New Britain sent him stateside for recovery then to Basic School in Quantico, he met his wife of 61 years, Eliza Jane, then a Sergeant in the Marines.
