Born Lois June Stroup on April 10, 1931, in Altamont, Kansas, she was the youngest of four siblings and the last living member of her immediate family. In her early years, she lost her mother Madelyn. Her father Grover did what he could. But as a teenager, she lived with a few of her older siblings, eventually taking her to Oklahoma City. Dortha was born in Headrick, Oklahoma on December 23, 1935 to the late Colian Pate Teel and Fannie Allridge Teel. She graduated from Scioto Rural High School of Wakefield, Ohio.
