Jennie was born in Union Hospital and grew up in North East, MD. She was the daughter of the late Mattie (Bottomley) and George McKinney. She spent weekends and summers on her aunt and uncle's farm in Galen, MD. She loved school and writing which made her an avid reader and a great speller.
