Born in Leeds, Alabama, on March 8, 1948, he was the son of the late Roy Edward Patterson, Sr. and the late Evelyn Frances Turner Patterson. Roy was a graduate of Jefferson State Community College with both Bachelor and Master degrees in Drafting. For more than 20 years, he worked as an engineer at Borden Engineering. After retiring from Borden, Roy found fulfillment in teaching at Bessemer Tech High School, where he taught for 15 years. Joann was employed as an accountant in the finance department of Lockheed Martin in Marietta where she retired after more than 30 years.
