Jeannette "Jan" Bailey Schermerhorn, 90, passed away on April 7, 2023, at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield on June 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lee Van Dyke and Alice N. (Neal) Schermerhorn, Sr. Jan lived in Longmeadow and Wilbraham during her childhood years. After receiving her bachelor's degree in education from Wheaton College, she taught in California, and then returned to New England to live and work in Connecticut. Jan taught in Milford before becoming a kindergarten and first grade teacher in the West Hartford Public Schools. After retiring from teaching, she moved to New Britain. John James Kiernan, 96, died May 11, 2022, surrounded by family. Born in Springfield on October 16, 1925, he was the son of the late John J. & Margaret (Byrne) Kiernan. He was a long-time resident of East Longmeadow. John attended Cathedral High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the age of 18. As a nose gunner in a B-17 bomber, John flew 26 missions over Germany during World War II. Returning home, he followed in his father's footsteps and got a job working on the railroad. Drafted at age 19, Aldo proudly served as a Seabee in the Navy's construction battalion in England during WWII.
