Peas and okra, watermelon jelly, and big fish tales are some of the things family members remember about Scottie Lynn Cherry, 57, of Honey Island, Texas who passed away on Wednesday,
September 21, 2022.
He was born on October 5, 1964, to Shirley Cherry, and Ernest Cherry, Sr. As the proud baby boy of the family, which he never let anyone forget, he was welcomed into his big family by four doting sisters and a big brother. He was a proud football player for the Kountze Lions before enlisting in the United States Army.
Following his service, Scottie returned home where he became a small business owner who contributed greatly to his community. Scottie met his wife, Pam, in 1992 and enjoyed being a stepdad to their four children and finally having "his baby girl." Their home was a safe place for their 19 nieces and nephews, 39 greats, and 12 great greats.
Scottie was most at peace on the Trinity River where he loved to fish and share his catch of the day with family and friends. He was an avid hunter who proudly contributed for years to the family's annual Hunters' Breakfast during hog season. He felt at home in his vegetable garden surrounded by his dogs, goats, rabbits, and chickens. He had a generous heart and loved surprising his family with new recipes; no one ever left his home empty-handed.
Scottie was welcomed into heaven by his mother, Shirley, and brothers-in-law; Melvin Walters, Buddy Moore, and Butch Alegre.
He is survived by his adoring wife of 30 years, Pam; children, Clint Baird and his wife Jennifer, Shane Baird and his wife, Marcie, Lance Baird and his wife, Brooke, and Lindsay Baird and wife Christie Welsh; grandchildren, Hunter, Brady, Mason, Carli, Christian, Tucker, Eldorado, and Colbie; great-grandchildren, Quinn, Oliver, and Owen.
He will be missed by his father Ernest Cherry Sr.; sisters, Jeanie Moore, and Catherine Buckner and her husband, Bubba, Debra, and Monese and her husband, Randy; brothers, Ernest Cherry Jr. and his wife, Necel, and Gary Hamilton and his wife, Janet, of Pasadena.
Scottie was loved by his nephew, Mel, who was like a son to him and countless nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A graveside memorial will be held on Tuesday, September 27, at 10:00 a.m. at Jordan Cemetery in Honey Island. A celebration of life will follow at the Wildwood Lodge in Village Mills.
