Sarah V. Brophy (Peg), 97 of Lenox, formerly of Dalton and Pittsfield, passed away May 24, 2022 at Mt. Carmel Care Center, where she had resided for the past seven years.
She was born on August 4, 1924 in Pittsfield, MA, second daughter to Wallace and Florence (LaVigne) O'Melia. The family lived briefly in Pittsfield before moving to Queens, NY. Peg grew up in New York and graduated from Andrew Jackson High School. She spent summers visiting maternal aunts in Dalton, MA where she met her future husband, Matthew J. Brophy, the ONLY boy she ever kissed. They were married in NYC on February 16, 1944 while Matt was home on leave from the US Army. After the war, they settled in Dalton and raised six children.
Very early in her marriage, Peg returned to the work place at Messenger's Garage in Dalton. She also worked at the "First Aggie" bank and Byron-Weston Company before moving to Kriger and Brazee, CPAs. She left there in March of 1987 to begin her own independent bookkeeping service. Her clients included among others, Paul's Restaurant, Gillette Rentals, Ken's Bowl, Nifty Cleaners and Jean's Cleaners, all in Pittsfield. In the late sixties, Peg learned cake decorating and provided beautiful cakes for all occasions for family and friends. She was a member of the Catholic Church and was active for many years in the American Legion Auxiliary. Peg was an avid reader, a superb candle-pin bowler and played in an organized bridge club for decades until it dissolved a few years ago. Matt and Peg enjoyed 53 wonderful years of marriage before Matt passed away in 1997.
She is survived by her children: Jim (Mary Lou) Brophy of Boynton Beach, FL, Kathy (Dennis) Lane, of Dalton, MA, Lynn (John) Devine of Portland, ME, Peggy Sedgwick (Mike Organ) of Evansville, IN, and Jacky Brophy (Lenny Wheeler) of Richmond, VA.
