Sarah Borders Armstrong Lloyd, known to family and friends as Sally, died peacefully in Charlotte, NC after dealing bravely with multiple health problems for several years.
The daughter of William Burwell Armstrong, Sr and Josephine Legare Armstrong, she was born in Gastonia, NC, and raised in a loving family which included older sister, Candace and younger brother, Bill. Life for her family changed when her father died in 1958. When her mother became employed by Provident Life Insurance Company her maternal grandmother came to live with them. Her paternal grandmother and several great aunts provided much love and support. After graduating from Frank L. Ashley High School, she attended Erskine College where she earned a BA in Elementary Education and joined the Athenian Literary Society. Sally then accepted a position as first grade teacher at Buford Elementary School in Lancaster County, SC where she taught for 30 years. While teaching she earned her MAT from Winthrop University.
At Buford one of her first-grade students introduced her to his father, James Lloyd. Sally and James were married in 1974 and enjoyed a happy life together until his death in 2005. Their family included James's children Cindy and Jimmy. They enjoyed spending time with grandchildren. Since James was the oldest in his family, they looked forward to hosting a Christmas party for his clan each year.
Sally and James joined First ARP Church in Lancaster where Sally became active in the Jones Robinson Pressly Circle and as a Sunday School teacher. She volunteered at HOPE of Lancaster, even overcoming her fear of computers to become an intake volunteer. Summers often included road trips around the Southeast for Sally and James. They particularly enjoyed trips from their time share near Pickens, SC and exploring the mountains and foothills of North and South Carolina. The big road trip was to the Colorado Rockies with Candace and Bill, experiencing travel across the plains then climbing the Rockies to Grand Lake.
Sally was predeceased by her husband, James B Lloyd, Sr, infant daughter Patricia Ann, step granddaughters Christy Boone and Courtney Lloyd.
Sally's survivors include sister Josephine Candace Armstrong, brother William Burwell Armstrong, Jr, stepdaughter, Cythia Boone, stepson James B Lloyd, Jr (Kim) and their families. Also remembering Sally will be her wonderful neighbors, Judy and Charles Steven, Sherri Maree and good friend Clovis Steele. Cousins who have happy memories of childhood fun and holidays are Legare Nadelman (Fred), Bill Rankin, Scott Wilson (Sara), and Martin Wilson (Tonya), Lee Armstrong, Morgan Armstrong.
A memorial service to celebrate Sally's life will be held Saturday, August 24, 11:00 at First ARP Church, Lancaster, SC with a reception to follow. Inurnment will be private at Hopewell Methodist Church.
Memorials may be made to HOPE of Lancaster, VIA Hospice and First ARP Church, Lancaster.
