Sarah Jane "Sally" Hunt, 91 years of age, passed November 9, 2021 at Wayne T. Patrick Hospice House surrounded by her loving family.
The family is planning a private memorial service in Rock Hill, South Carolina followed by an inurnment at Union Cemetery in Steubenville, Ohio at a future date, where she will join her beloved Ken.
Sally was born in 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Henderson and Jessie Evans. She and her sisters, Sue and Maryanne, grew up in Steubenville, Ohio. She was married to Kenneth Hunt for 57 years, until his passing in 2010. Sally graduated from The Laurel School in Cleveland, Ohio and moved on to Skidmore College in upstate New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Education. After marriage, she and Ken moved to Long Beach, California while he served in the Navy during the Korean War. After the war they moved back to Steubenville to raise four children, Marsue, John, David and Eliza.
In the early 1960's, Sally started a nursery school that became so popular she had a years-long waiting list. When her children reached their teenage years, she realized local high school kids did not have a place to go and hang out on weekends, so she started the Nucleus at a local technical college. Every Friday night high school kids could go listen to music and hang out with their friends.
In 1978, Sally's father passed away and it was out of that difficult time that she realized something was missing in the community. As a result, she founded Valley Hospice. She had to fight doctors and hospital administrators to get the support and space needed to provide critical end-of-life services. Due to her determination and perseverance, Valley Hospice is thriving today and has grown well beyond its initial roots in Steubenville.
Sally was also instrumental in Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ohio; the Ohio Valley Hospital board; Valley Hospice, and organizing various activities through her children. One of her greatest legacies is her family. We had many wonderful times together, a trip out west in a motor home, summers at Oglebay Park, family holidays with grandparents, holiday trips to Pittsburgh, and too many memories to count. She was very competitive golfer, ping pong and card player. She would gladly bet you in any game "for a nickel" or an "ice cream cone." The Gin card games between Sally and Ken were legendary, with scores posted regularly on the refrigerator. She also loved the opera, the symphony, and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Over the years she and Ken started to spend more time in Ft. Myers, Florida and finally moved there full-time in 2000. They started a new life full of new friends and experiences until 2010 when she lost Ken. Eventually she moved to North Carolina to be near her family.
Sally is survived by her sisters, MaryAnne (Jim) Singleton and Sue Daniels; her children, Martha Sue (Mike) Sams, John (Pam) Hunt, David Hunt, Mary Eliza (Chris) Meyer; her grandchildren, Lindsay, Allison, Jessie, Alex, Matthew, Jay, Brittany and Benjamin; her great-grandchildren Johnny and Sloane.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Sarah J. Hunt's name to Valley Hospice, 10686 State Route 150, Rayland, Oh 43943.

May she rest in peace.
