Sarah Wilkins Grissom, 82, of Rome, Georgia, passed away peacefully at Polk Medical Center on September 26, 2022, after battling COPD and other health issues for the last several years.
She was born to the late Sam and Grace Wilkins, May 23, 1940, in the Spring Creek community of Rome, Georgia. As an ambitious and intelligent young woman, Sarah graduated with honors from Pepperell High School in 1958. Shortly after graduation, she married and had three beautiful daughters, Cindy, Cheryl, and Suzanne, whom she considered her greatest pride and joy.
Sarah spent most of her career as an administrative assistant, first at GE and later at Shorter College, where she served in the Development office for about 25 years before retiring. In 1989, she married her second husband, Virgil Grissom, and they were together for 30 years, until his death in 2019. They loved spending time with family and friends, especially in the panhandle of Florida, where they owned property for years.
Sarah was passionate about her family, particularly her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was committed to ensuring her daughters were well-educated and independent, and all three achieved masters level education and career success. But Sarah was also fun-loving, mischievous, and personable, which any of her friends, her daughters' friends, as well as her caregivers in later years, would attest to. She also loved gardening and Southern cooking, and was especially well known for her cornbread dressing and red velvet cakes.
Sarah was preceded in death by Virgil Grissom, her husband of 30 years, and her three siblings, Edna Turner, Geneva Carroll and Charlie Wilkins.
She is survived by her former husband and the father of her children, Max Spencer Johnson, their three daughters, Cindy Boling (Gary) of Rome, Cheryl Weldon of Atlanta, and Suzanne Kiefer (Ron) of Milton; 6 grandchildren, Jeremiah Boling (Caroline), Briana Lawrence (Drew), Patrick Boling (Lindsey), Matthew Kiefer (Beth), Andrew Kiefer, and Ansley Kiefer; and 6 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022, at 2:00pm in the Chapel of Henderson & Sons Funeral Home, Oaknoll Chapel. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
