86, passed away July 8, 2022 after a brief illness. She was born August 11, 1935 in Chicago, IL, to Arlys (Roberts) and Monroe Emerson. Sarah graduated from high school in Boonville, IN, in 1953, received a BS (1959) and a MS (1978) in Nursing at Indiana University and EdD in Nursing from Missouri in 1987. Sarah spent a long career as a professor of Nursing at Indiana State University teaching several undergraduate and graduate courses as well as served on several university committees and boards.
During her long-life Sarah was active in many organizations including but not limited to Sigma Theta Tau, Indianapolis Women's Club, Pi Lambda Theta, League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, Indiana Protection Advocacy Services Commission, a life member of The American Public Health Association, was the first woman to serve on the school board in Marshall, IL, 1st United Methodist Church in Marshall, IL, St. Alban's Episcopal Church and by the amazing grace of a loving God, she was a friend of Lois for over 40 years.
Sarah enjoyed traveling the world for over 35 years, visiting with friends and family, playing the piano and organ, volunteering in her community, gardening, was an avid pet and animal lover, knitting, working on crossword puzzles and was a wonderful storyteller.
Sarah was the foundation of our family, and bonded us through her ready smile, steady encouragement, and quick wit. The memory of her upbeat temperament and good nature will continue to guide and influence our lives forever. We take comfort in knowing that she passed peacefully. Beloved mother, grandmother "Nana" and friend, we love you forever. Godspeed Mom.
A viewing and funeral service will be held Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 4601 Emerson Avenue. Following the graveside service, friends and family will gather at Robin Run Village at 3:00 p.m.
Sarah is survived by her four sons, commonly called the "Hayes Boys", Steve (Mary) of St. Petersburg, FL, Greg (Sherry) of Emerald Isle, NC, Mike (Crystal) of Bloomington, IL, and Kenneth "K.C." (Debbie) of Corpus Christi, TX; one sister-in-law, Marty Emerson of Helotes, TX; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Madison, Zackary and Jonathan; and one great-grandson, Oliver. She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Arlys; and her brother, Paul Emerson. The family of Sarah Emerson wishes to extend their sincere thanks to her fellow nurses at St. Vincent Hospital, St. Alban's Episcopal Church, neighbors, and friends for their prayers and acts of kindness during this time.
