Sara Lippard Hoyt was born on January 3, 1924 in Concord NC to George Samuel and Ruth Cecil Lippard and died on February 14, 2024 in Asheville, NC. She grew up in Hot Springs, NC, and was a graduate of Tusculum College, Greenville, Tennessee and the University of North Carolina School of Medicine at Chapel Hill, NC. She completed pediatrics residencies at Duke University Medical School and the North Carolina School of Medicine, and practiced pediatrics in Rome, GA from 1960 until retiring to Asheville, NC in 2001. She was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatrics. She was also the recipient of The Pioneer Award from Tusculum College for outstanding alumnus in 2005 and the Distinguished Medical Alumnus Award from the School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina in 2017.
Dr. Hoyt was an elder in the Presbyterian Church USA and served on the Rome City School Board of Education for 10 years. She was conferred an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the greater Rome Chamber of Commerce and served as a volunteer for the Hospitality House for Women.
Sara was inspired by the beauty of the natural world. She loved to hike, garden, draw, paint,
woodwork, create jewelry and weave. She was always available for the next game of bridge, Mahjong or Croquet. Sara had an insatiable curiosity about the world and was always willing to experience something new.
She was predeceased by her parents, a brother, George Lippard, sisters Margaret Morris, Ruth Smith, Nancy Lippard Lalley, a son-in-law, The Reverend Dr. Tim Hoyt Duncan, and her husband of 69 years, Dr. William Russell Hoyt III.
She is survived by her daughters Nancy Hoyt Duncan, Jane Hoyt Leidlein, M.D. (Hugh), Harriette Hoyt (Brian), grandchildren Christopher Leidlein M.D. (Michelle), Katherine Leidlein (Lucian) and great-grandchildren, Lily, Philip, and Vivienne Leidlein, and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Deerfield Retirement Community for the incredible compassionate care provided to both of our parents.
