Dr. Sanford Halprin "Sandy" Daniel 73, of Columbia, SC passed away on January 5, 2021 surrounded by family and friends in the comfort of his home after complications of COVID. Born in Dalton, GA on April 20, 1947, Sandy was the son the late Charles Bernard "Dan" and Evelyn Halprin Daniel. The Daniel family relocated to the Columbia area in 1951 where Sandy grew up during his primary and secondary school years. Sandy attended A.C. Fora High School where he excelled in the classroom as well as the football field. During his senior year he was recruited to play football at Clemson by the legendary coach Frank Howard. After three years at Clemson, he left and enrolled in the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia graduating in 1972. After graduating from veterinary school, he received a direct commission in the United States Army. He served for 2 years and was Honorably Discharged.
After serving his country, Sandy returned to Columbia in 1975 to practice veterinary medicine. He shared his love of animals and cared for many pets over the years at his two clinics, Parklane Animal Hospital and Northeast Animal Clinic. Sandy exhibited a "love of life" and enjoyed playing multiple sports to include football, basketball, tennis and golf. He was an avid outdoorsman and devoted Clemson fan. He most enjoyed turkey hunting and traveling with his family. Sandy attended the Tree of Life Temple.
In 1993 he met the love of his life Dr. Beverly Williams. Together they raised 2 children and kept a menagerie of pets, dogs, cats and birds.
Sandy is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Dr. Beverly W. Daniel, his daughter Hannah R. Daniel of Columbia, his son Zachary S. Daniel of Spartanburg, his sister Susan Altman (Charles) of Charleston and his nephew David Altman of Jacksonville, FL. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Evelyn Daniel. He is also survived by his aunts and many nephews and nieces.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to all the friends, neighbors, caregivers and medical professionals that have provided so much love and support throughout his illness.
A private graveside service for Dr. Daniel will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2021 with retired Rabbi Sanford Marcus officiating. Dunbar Funeral Home will be handling funeral arrangements and will live stream the service on the Dunbar Funeral Home Facebook page. A celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
