Samuel Dorsey Martin, Jr. , 96 Mar 17, 1925 - Jul 27, 2021 Samuel Dorsey Martin, Jr., known as "Jr.", 96, filled with love and compassion, passed away on July 27, 2021, at Doey's House in Hagerstown, MD.
Born Tuesday, March 17, 1925 in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of late the Samuel Dorsey Martin, Sr. and Alice Rockle (Keefer) Martin. He was a loving and devoted husband and father.
Jr. attended Hagerstown High School where he met Betty Charles. They were married for 71 years -- from March 27, 1949 - 2020. During those years they had two daughters. He worked for his family's business.
Jr. served as a PFC in the military from September 7, 1943 - April 4, 1946. He served in the 289th Engr (C) Battalion.
Dorsey was the General Manager of Wilson's Store at Conococheague Creek. His sister Janice (Martin) Keefer and brother Oliver Keefer Martin also helped to keep the family business in operation. After Samuel Dorsey Martin, Sr. had a stroke, the family made the difficult decision to close the oldest store (128 years of continuous service in Maryland) in 1975. The family also had a stall at The City Market which he attended every Saturday. Dorsey continued his working career with R. D. McKee.
Left to honor his memory are two daughters -- Brenda L. Martin and Virginia M. Martin, sister -- Janice Catherine Keefer, brother Oliver "Keefer" Martin and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorsey was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Charles) Martin on November 6, 2020; his parents and brother, Robert Franklin Martin.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 96 years and served on the Ushering Team. He was also a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
He enjoyed collecting stamps and was a member of the Hagerstown Stamp Club. He also enjoyed meeting with the Senior Swim Class at the YMCA.
He will be missed by his family and many friends who are thankful for all the years they shared with him.
A very special thanks, to his caregiver Gwen Harrigan, who made an incredible difference to Dorsey during his last months.
The Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home will be open on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. - 5 p.m. for the convenience of family and friends.
Interment will be at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown, MD at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 4, 2021 with Military Honors.
Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 10:15 am to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service on August 4, 2021.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North Hagerstown, MD.
