Rudy was born on January 23, 1947 in the Netherlands. In 1953 he immigrated to the United States with his family. They settled in Northern Virginia. He attended Falls Church High School, where he met his future wife, Judy. He graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1969 and received his law degree in 1972 from the University of Virginia. He then entered the US Army JAG Corps, where he went on to serve for 22 years until hs retirement in 1994. He worked for the federal government for the next 15 years. During this time he earned two Masters degrees and a graduate degree in Law. He and Judy married in 1971. They traveled the world together, with assignments in Germany, Alabama, South Korea and Washington state, as well as two tours in the Northern Virginia area. They raised two sons and Rudy coached them both in soccer. In 2006 they left city life and moved to Rappahannock County. Rudy loved the country. He thrived on the quiet and took joy in watching the wildlife and spending time in the woods. He hunted each fall and usually bagged four deer each season. What the family couldn't consume he donated to Hunters for the Hungry. He joined the Lions Club, where he sponsored the LEO club, and became active at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington, VA. With a lifelong love of history and the military, he participated in reenacting both Civil War battles and Napoleonic battles. The Napoleonic reenacting took him to Canada and to Europe where he made good friends with men from Canada, the Netherlands and France.
Rudy leaves behind Judy, his wife of 50 years, two sons (Chris and wife Betty and 2 grandsons, Casey and Webb) and Rob and wife Jennifer, his brother Edward and many family members still in the Netherlands.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 379 Gay Street, Washington, VA on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 1PM.
A service with full military honors will follow at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
